Hundidero

Hundidero is an open air settlement in the Cardeñuela de Río Pico municipality on the grounds of the Castrillo del Val military base. It was once a pond set on an old terrace of the Arlanzón River. Hundidero was studied during two consecutive digs (2004 and 2005). Stone tools from the Middle Palaeolithic have been found here, manufactured and accumulated to a depth of almost 2 metres. Hunter-gatherer groups, agriculturalists and livestock farmers used the caves at certain times, but they also used an open air space for their hunting, gathering, carving, agriculture, grazing and other activities). Analysis of the material unearthed at these sites helps us to understand the large area that they roamed, i.e., the everyday lives of these Sierra de Atapuerca hominids.
