The excavation team began by clearing up the old dig, documenting its stratigraphy and installing the infrastructure required to start work on this Holocene site, which will help us to complete the Sierra's prehistoric sequence.
The 2007 dig in Portalón de Cueva Mayor focused on the Chalcolithic occupation levels. Excavation revealed the existence of a rich packet with abundant bones from ovicaprids, bovids and equids. Large ceramic storage urns are mingled with small, smooth decorated bowls. There is a wide variety of worked bone objects including ivory buttons with V-shaped perforations, awls and arrowheads, bone and ceramic necklaces made from bone, ceramics and shells or dentalium.
