The Gonzalo Santonja Library is part of the Castilla y León Library Network and is currently in the process of cataloguing and describing its bibliographic holdings. The bibliographic collection of Emiliano Aguirre, deposited in 2018, is now being catalogued. A second deposit of his personal library, from his residence in Madrid, is still pending delivery.
The materials are integrated into the collective catalogue Rabel, maintained by the Regional Government of Castilla y León through the Department of Culture, Tourism and Sport, and coordinated by the Castilla y León Library.
The description of the bibliographic holdings follows the Spanish Cataloguing Rules and international library standards, using the AbsysNet 2.3.1 library management system.

Professor Emiliano Aguirre’s library forms part of the Memory of Atapuerca and consists of more than 2,200 books. These holdings are currently owned by the Emiliano Aguirre Paleontological Foundation and managed by the Atapuerca Foundation. It is a historic collection that includes titles dating back to the 1950s, as well as offprints and scientific articles ranging from the 1930s well into the 21st century.
The Atapuerca Foundation and the Emiliano Aguirre Paleontological Foundation work together to fulfill the researcher’s wish that his personal library remain in Ibeas de Juarros (Burgos), as he always identified with his region and with the local community.
The bibliographic collection reflects Aguirre’s education and multidisciplinary interests in natural sciences, geology, paleontology, biology, zoology, philosophy, the humanities, and theology. The collection also includes books in several languages, highlighting his polyglot, curious, and far-travelled nature.
Professor Emiliano Aguirre was a leading scientific figure in the second half of the 20th century, initially excelling in vertebrate paleontology and later in paleoanthropology, his great passion.
