Railway cutting complex

Sima del Elefante

The oldest Sierra de Atapuerca site. 1.3 million year-old human remains have been found here, the oldest in Western Europe.

Galería complex

This site was a natural trap for pre-Neandertal humans 500,000 years ago. They fed on the flesh of animals that fell into this cave.

Gran Dolina

This cave was occupied at two different times in prehistory: Homo antecessors inhabited this cave 850,000 years ago, and then pre-Neanderthals used it as a campsite 350,000 years ago.
